Arsenal have made a surprise move for Aston Villa and England striker Ollie Watkins as they scramble for a new forward before the January transfer window closes.

With Gabriel Jesus ruled out for the season and Kai Havertz struggling in front of goal, Mikel Arteta is eager to strengthen his attacking options.

While the Gunners have been linked with Benjamin Sesko, Dusan Vlahovic, and Victor Osimhen, they are now targeting a proven Premier League striker in Watkins.

Arsenal submitted a £60M bid for the 29-year-old, which was swiftly rejected by Aston Villa. However, the North London club is expected to return with an improved offer.

Arteta has long been an admirer of Watkins, who has consistently hit double figures in the Premier League over the past five seasons.

Last year, he had his most prolific campaign, scoring 27 goals in all competitions and helping Villa secure a Champions League spot under former Arsenal boss Unai Emery.

Watkins, who played a pivotal role for England at the Euros, grew up supporting Arsenal and once described playing for the club as his “dream.”

However, he remains under contract at Villa for another three years, making a January move difficult.

While Arsenal focus on Watkins, Villa have also been dealing with interest in their other striker, Jhon Duran.

The 20-year-old has attracted attention from Arsenal, Chelsea, and West Ham, but could now be heading to Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr.

With Arsenal trailing league leaders Liverpool by six points, club officials believe Watkins could be the missing piece to their title challenge. The question now is whether they can convince Villa to part ways with their star striker.
