Atalanta Owner Calls Out Gasperini for Criticizing Lookman

Stephen Pagliuca

Atalanta co-owner Stephen Pagliuca has admitted that head coach Gian Piero Gasperini made a significant error in publicly criticizing Ademola Lookman. The controversy erupted after Lookman missed a penalty in Atalanta’s Champions League loss to Club Brugge, prompting Gasperini to single him out in post-match comments. Lookman, clearly displeased, responded on social media, calling his manager’s remarks “disrespectful.”

Pagliuca, speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport, emphasized that such public criticism goes against Atalanta’s core values, particularly under the leadership of the Percassi family. “We want to put this situation behind us, and I think we have, considering the 5-0 victory [against Empoli],” he stated. “These matches are always intense. We love the passion with which they are played. We have a great coach, very passionate. But he made a mistake by speaking about an individual.”

Club Values and Internal Responsibility

The Atalanta co-owner reinforced the club’s commitment to collective responsibility rather than blaming individuals for setbacks. “At Atalanta, we have a policy: if things go wrong, we take responsibility. We look at ourselves and how to improve,” Pagliuca explained.

The club’s approach revolves around self-reflection rather than singling out players publicly, which is why Gasperini’s comments caused significant internal debate.

This incident has brought attention to the balance between managerial passion and professionalism. While Gasperini is known for his fiery temperament and strong leadership, this situation highlighted the need for discretion when dealing with players in the media.

Lookman’s Importance to Atalanta’s Season

Despite the controversy, Pagliuca made it clear that Lookman remains a key figure in Atalanta’s squad. “The players are having an extraordinary season; we wouldn’t be where we are now without the contributions of Lookman, De Ketelaere, and the whole team,” he said. “I should name them all.”

The club’s Champions League campaign has been challenging, especially with five key players missing due to injuries. Given the circumstances, Pagliuca acknowledged that Gasperini’s emotional reaction was regrettable but reaffirmed his belief in the coach.

Gasperini’s reaction was emotional and unfortunate, and it was a mistake that went against our policy something we are not proud of. But I repeat, Gasp remains a great coach.”

Moving Forward After the Incident

While Gasperini’s comments created unwanted tension, Atalanta’s dominant 5-0 win over Empoli suggests that the team remains united. The club will now focus on finishing the season strong, with Lookman playing a vital role in their ambitions.

This episode serves as a reminder that strong leadership requires not just passion but also careful communication, especially in high-pressure situations.

Whether Gasperini adjusts his approach moving forward remains to be seen, but Atalanta’s hierarchy has made it clear that unity and responsibility are the club’s guiding principles.
