Barcelona have set their sights on Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey, whose contract is set to expire at the end of the season.

The 31-year-old Ghanaian, who joined the Gunners in 2020 from Atletico Madrid, has been a crucial part of Mikel Arteta’s plans.

This season, Partey has featured in 17 Premier League matches, starting 14 of them, and has played a pivotal role in all six of Arsenal’s Champions League fixtures, showcasing his importance to the squad.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona are monitoring Partey closely, viewing him as a key target for the summer.

Financial constraints continue to plague the Catalan club, pushing them toward free transfer options in 2025. If Partey doesn’t renew his deal with Arsenal, he could become a top candidate to strengthen Barcelona’s midfield.

The report suggests that Barcelona might consider selling Frenkie de Jong at the end of the season. Partey, with his defensive prowess and experience, is seen as a potential replacement for the Dutchman, especially since no transfer fee would be involved.

However, Arsenal are keen to retain the midfielder. Arteta has hinted at his desire to keep Partey in north London. Speaking last month about his contract situation, Arteta said, “We will have the right time to discuss the situation.

He is showing consistency at the highest level. His availability and physical condition have been key, and I’m very pleased with his contributions.”

Arsenal will need to act quickly if they want to secure Partey’s future. Players nearing the end of their contracts can start negotiating with overseas clubs from January.

In addition to Partey, Arsenal face uncertainty over the futures of Jorginho and Kieran Tierney, who are also in the final months of their deals.

Tierney is widely expected to leave, but Jorginho’s situation remains unclear. The 33-year-old has been a rotational player for Arsenal, though Arteta values his leadership and unique playing style.

When Jorginho extended his contract in May, Arteta praised the Italian, saying, “Jorgi is an important part of our team. He’s a role model with great leadership skills and a unique ability to improve those around him on the pitch.”

With multiple key players nearing free agency, Arsenal face a critical period in securing their squad’s long-term future.
