Barcelona have set their sights on Espanyol defender Omar El Hilali as they look to strengthen their squad in the upcoming summer transfer window. The 21-year-old has been one of Espanyol’s standout performers this season, making 25 appearances, including 24 in La Liga, and earning praise for his consistency.

Despite being under contract until 2027, El Hilali reportedly has a relatively low release clause, making him an attractive target for Barcelona. According to SPORT, the club’s sporting director Deco is a huge admirer of the Moroccan full-back and sees him as a potential bargain signing.

Barcelona are prioritizing a right-back this summer but are working with a limited budget, as their main focus remains securing a long-term replacement for Robert Lewandowski. With Jules Kounde currently playing out of position at right-back, head coach Hansi Flick is eager to bring in a specialist for the role.

El Hilali has been part of Espanyol since 2016, rising through the ranks before making his first-team debut in 2021. While he has no experience in European competitions, Barcelona’s scouting team believes he has the potential to be a valuable addition to the squad.

Youngster Hector Fort has also featured at right-back for Barcelona this season, making 14 appearances. However, doubts over his long-term future remain, as he has just 18 months left on his contract, which has yet to be extended.

Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia is another player attracting Barcelona’s interest, though Premier League clubs Arsenal and Manchester United are also monitoring the 23-year-old shot-stopper. Garcia has impressed this season, making 25 appearances, and could be available for less than his €30m release clause.

Espanyol’s sporting director, Fran Garagarza, has acknowledged that the club may be forced to sell Garcia for a lower fee, particularly if they fail to secure their La Liga status. A deal could be struck for a fee significantly below the clause if the right offer arrives early in the transfer window.

Given the fierce rivalry between Barcelona and Espanyol, negotiations for El Hilali and Garcia could be challenging. However, Espanyol’s financial situation and potential relegation battle could make them more open to deals, leaving Barcelona with a unique opportunity to secure key reinforcements.
