Bayern Munich’s rising star Mathys Tel is on the verge of a Premier League switch, with Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa emerging as frontrunners for his signature.
The 19-year-old forward has struggled for regular game time this season, starting just four matches, prompting interest from multiple English clubs, including Manchester United, Chelsea, and Arsenal.
Tottenham have taken a significant step ahead in the race, having verbally agreed to a £50 million deal with Bayern. Manager Ange Postecoglou is eager to strengthen his injury-hit squad, and Tel could find the consistent minutes he seeks in North London.
Their determination to finalize the deal has reportedly led Saudi club Al-Ahli to pull out of discussions, expecting the French youngster to land at either Spurs or Villa.
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has even flown to Munich for direct negotiations with Tel and his representatives, according to Fabrizio Romano. Meanwhile, Aston Villa, having just secured £64 million from Jhon Duran’s sale to Al-Nassr, are in a strong financial position to rival Tottenham’s bid.
Despite Arsenal’s reported interest in Villa’s star striker Ollie Watkins, manager Unai Emery is determined to keep him at the club, which could push Villa to prioritize Tel’s signing.
Manchester United have also inquired about a potential loan move, but their ability to make a deal hinges on outgoing transfers at Old Trafford.
Chelsea, too, remain in the mix, but Tel is reportedly hesitant about a switch to Stamford Bridge due to fierce competition for attacking positions. Arsenal, despite needing additional firepower for their title push, have yet to make a concrete offer.
As the transfer window nears its close, Tel’s decision could have a major impact on the Premier League’s second half of the season.
