Former Manchester City goalkeeper Shay Given has criticized Super Eagles forward Victor Boniface for his performance during Bayer Leverkusen’s 4-0 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield on Tuesday in the Champions League.

Given, who was working as a pundit for Premier League Sports Ireland, expressed disappointment in the Nigerian international’s contribution, especially in the attacking third.

Given questioned Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso’s decision to deploy Boniface on the left wing, a position he felt was not ideal for the striker. “Boniface at times was playing on the left wing. You want him to be more of a target man; you want to bring some sort of injection to the attack,” Given remarked.

He also noted that while Leverkusen played well from the back and through the thirds, they were ultimately poor in the final third of the pitch, where Boniface’s performance was especially lacking.

Given’s comments come after a series of disappointing results for Leverkusen, with the forward failing to make a significant impact on the game. The criticism highlights the need for Boniface to be utilized in a more central role, where he can better influence the match.
