Joe Cole has urged Bruno Fernandes to leave Manchester United, insisting the Portuguese star deserves a stronger team. United’s season has been turbulent under Ruben Amorim, with just three wins in their last 11 matches, leaving them sitting 14th in the Premier League.

One of those victories came against Fulham, whom they’ll face again on Sunday in the FA Cup fifth round. Throughout the campaign, consistency has been hard to find, with even club captain Fernandes experiencing fluctuating form as he adapts to Amorim’s approach.

Despite contributing 10 goals and 13 assists across all competitions, Fernandes has faced criticism over his leadership, compounded by three red cards in the first half of the season.

The recent 2-2 draw against Everton showcased both his brilliance and flaws. While David Moyes praised the 30-year-old, Alan Shearer was far more critical. Some reports even suggest Fernandes is unhappy playing under Amorim, and Cole believes both sides would benefit from a split.

“He’s an exceptional player,” Cole told Paddy Power. “Not on the level of Steven Gerrard, Paul Scholes, or Kevin De Bruyne, but he’s been outstanding for United during one of their toughest periods in decades.”

Cole added that Fernandes has done enough to leave with his head held high but should be part of a better squad. He also suggested United might need to cash in and reshape their squad with players who fit Amorim’s system.

Despite speculation, Fernandes’ departure seems unlikely. He signed a contract extension last August, keeping him at Old Trafford until 2027, with an option for an additional year.

Roy Keane has been among his harshest critics, branding him an “imposter” and questioning his mentality. However, Amorim defended his captain, stating: “Keane’s standards come from a different era. As the manager, my opinion matters more.”
