Bruno Fernandes has downplayed the significance of manager Ruben Amorim’s fiery remarks about Manchester United following their recent struggles.
QAfter United’s 3-1 home loss to Brighton, Amorim did not hold back in criticizing the team, calling it “the worst in the club’s history.”
Speaking after the defeat, Amorim expressed his frustrations openly. “Imagine what this means to a Manchester United fan or to me,” he said.
“We have a new coach losing more games than the previous one. I’m fully aware of that. We may be the worst team in the history of this club. I know you [media] want headlines, so here you go.”
Amorim later admitted he regretted his harsh words, attributing them to the heat of the moment. Reflecting on the comments after United’s Europa League win against Rangers, Fernandes defended his manager.
“I don’t think he truly feels that way,” Fernandes explained. “As a Portuguese person, I understand—we get passionate quickly, and emotions can take over.”
The midfielder also compared Amorim’s outburst to past experiences under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, a calm figure who occasionally expressed anger to motivate the team. “Managers want to win. Sometimes they need to use tough words to push players,” Fernandes said.
Fernandes contextualized Amorim’s remarks, pointing to United’s position in the league. “When he says ‘the worst team,’ he means the situation we’re in.
It’s the truth—we’re at a low point, and this club doesn’t belong here. We need to accept that and work to rise higher,” he stressed.
Acknowledging the team’s inconsistency, Fernandes emphasized the importance of resilience. “Every game is a chance to rebuild.
This season has been a rollercoaster, but every setback is an opportunity to fight back. Playing for Manchester United requires strength, pressure, and determination,” he concluded.
Despite the criticism, Fernandes’ words signal hope, urging the team to overcome challenges and restore the club to its rightful place in football.
