Real Madrid’s head coach, Carlo Ancelotti, recently opened up about what he considers his “worst mistake” during his time with the club.

The 65-year-old Italian coach, who returned to Real Madrid in 2021 after an earlier spell from 2013 to 2015, admitted that a disagreement over his contract salary in 2014 almost ended his tenure sooner than expected.
Ancelotti, who has delivered remarkable success for Real Madrid, leading the club to 14 major trophies, spoke about the moment in an interview with France Football: “After my first year here, I was very close to extending my contract.
The club wanted me to stay, but I pushed too hard regarding my salary, and they backed off. It was a mistake, my worst here, but it taught me a lot.”
Reflecting on his extensive coaching career, Ancelotti, who has been at the helm of some of Europe’s biggest clubs, also shared insight into his relationships with influential players.
He highlighted Paolo Maldini as one of the most significant players in his career, citing their close connection at AC Milan, where Maldini served as his captain.
Ancelotti also noted the impact of other high-profile players like Zlatan Ibrahimovic, acknowledging their “strong personalities” and how, despite their big egos, they set motivational examples on the field.
Ancelotti also praised the character of his recent squad at Real Madrid, especially veterans like Luka Modric, Toni Kroos, Dani Carvajal, and Nacho. According to him, these players exemplify humility and professionalism, maintaining a low ego that fosters unity.
“From a relational point of view, it was great,” he said. “No player complained about not playing. It was a dream environment to coach in.”
