Cesc Fabregas’ Como has entered the competition to secure a loan deal for Marcus Rashford, the Manchester United forward seeking a fresh start this January.
Rashford shocked fans last month when he announced his desire for “a new challenge and next steps” in his career.
Once a key figure in United’s attack and a shining academy graduate, the 27-year-old has struggled for form, scoring just 15 goals since his stellar 2022/23 season.
His last appearance for United was in their Europa League win over Viktoria Plzen, and he has missed the last six matches due to illness.
Rashford was listed as a substitute in United’s 2-0 defeat to Newcastle but hasn’t returned to action since, leaving his future uncertain.
Galatasaray acted quickly after his announcement, proposing a six-month loan deal that Rashford rejected. Meanwhile, AC Milan has emerged as a strong contender, with Rashford’s agent and brother, Dwaine Maynard, engaging in talks with the Italian club.
Now, Serie B side Como, guided by Fabregas, has entered the fray. According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Como is confident about meeting Rashford’s demands.
The club aims to leverage Raphael Varane, who joined them last summer, to entice the England international. Rashford’s former teammate, Dele Alli, has also been seen training with the Italian side, fueling speculation.
United’s management acknowledges that they might need to subsidize a significant portion of Rashford’s £350,000-a-week wage to finalize a move before the January transfer window closes.
Despite the speculation, Rashford has denied claims of working with a sports agency to expedite his exit, calling such reports “ridiculous” in an Instagram post. And he also turned down an offer from Saudi Clubs Offering him huge offer per week
Amid the uncertainty, United manager Ruben Amorim maintains that Rashford’s future depends on his own commitment. Speaking to Sky Sports, Amorim emphasized, “It’s up to Marcus. He’s part of the squad and ready to play if I decide.”
Amorim defended his decision to bench Rashford during the Newcastle match, opting for Alejandro Garnacho instead. “He was available, but I made the choice based on the needs of the game,” he said.
As the January deadline looms, Rashford’s next move remains one of the biggest questions in football.
