Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has yet to confirm who will start in goal against West Ham, but his latest comments suggest Robert Sanchez’s place is far from secure. The Spanish shot-stopper has been first choice this season despite inconsistent performances, with Chelsea conceding 30 goals in 23 Premier League matches—more than Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth.
Sanchez played in Chelsea’s 3-1 defeat to Manchester City, leading to growing calls from fans for summer signing Filip Jorgensen to take over. The 22-year-old, signed from Villarreal, has made 13 appearances but only two in the Premier League.
Maresca remains undecided on his choice for Monday’s game. “Not yet. We have two or three days,” he said. “Any decision I make, I feel good because Filip has done well. Filip or Robert, we will see, but any decision will be okay.”
He dismissed concerns that Jorgensen’s confidence might suffer if Sanchez remains in goal but made it clear that past favoritism will not override current form. “The first time I spoke with Filip in July, I made it clear that the number one choice was Robert,” Maresca said. “That doesn’t mean Robert can make a mistake every game and stay in goal.”
Maresca also urged Chelsea fans to support the team despite frustrations. “We need the fans. We need them, the players need them,” he emphasized. “They have to trust our direction. If I see something I don’t like, I’m the first one to not accept that.”
One option Maresca ruled out was recalling Kepa Arrizabalaga from his loan spell at Real Madrid. “No, absolutely not,” he said, shutting down any speculation about a potential return for the Spanish keeper.
