Chelsea were without club captain Reece James for their Premier League clash against Leicester City on Sunday. The right-back had impressed in Chelsea’s Europa Conference League victory over Copenhagen on Thursday night, scoring a superb goal in the 2-1 win. However, just three days later, he was absent from the matchday squad due to illness.

James reported a fever and high temperature to Chelsea’s medical team and was deemed unfit to feature. His absence was one of seven changes made by Enzo Maresca, with Malo Gusto also missing out through injury. Chelsea reshuffled their lineup, with Wesley Fofana, Levi Colwill, Marc Cucurella, Pedro Neto, Jadon Sancho, and Christopher Nkunku all earning starts.

The Blues aimed to boost their top-four hopes against struggling Leicester City, who entered the game sitting second from bottom in the league. Chelsea had won their last four matches against the Foxes but had struggled with consistency, losing three of their last five league games. Meanwhile, Ruud van Nistelrooy’s Leicester had lost four consecutive matches and were six points adrift of safety.

Despite his illness, James could still receive a recall to the England squad next week when new manager Thomas Tuchel announces his selections. The 25-year-old has not featured for the Three Lions since 2023, mainly due to recurring injury setbacks. However, his strong recent performances could put him back in contention.

Former Chelsea and England star Joe Cole praised James after the Copenhagen win, highlighting his immense technical and physical ability. Speaking to TNT Sports, Cole expressed his belief that James still has a major role to play for both Chelsea and England if he can maintain his fitness and form.

“When he was at his best, he was as good as anyone in the world, no doubt about that,” Cole said. “It’s just about him finding his inner peace and managing himself into games. He’s got so much to offer Chelsea and England.”

James has also showcased his versatility, having played in midfield during a loan spell at Wigan Athletic, where he won the club’s Player of the Year award. Cole believes his ability to impact games in multiple positions makes him an invaluable asset.

“Don’t give up on Reece James,” Cole added. “There is still a world-class player in there who can be a massive player for Chelsea and England. Hopefully, he can keep going now.”
