Chelsea were hit with an unexpected blow before their Premier League clash against Manchester City, as Joao Felix was granted compassionate leave following a family bereavement.
The Portugal international, who has seen limited action this season, has returned home. His future remains uncertain, with reports linking him to a potential loan move to AC Milan.
Manchester City, under Pep Guardiola, are also in a tough spot. Despite their domestic dominance in recent years, City find themselves outside the Champions League playoff places after a shocking 4-2 loss to Paris St Germain.
With just one group-stage game remaining, Guardiola’s team, sitting 25th in the standings, must finish in the top 24 to keep their European campaign alive.
City assistant coach Enzo Maresca defended Guardiola amid growing pressure, urging for support during the team’s rare slump.
“Pep is strong, but like anyone, he needs support. For years, City have been at the top. It’s normal to experience challenges like this,” Maresca said.
Chelsea, currently fifth in the league and trailing City by two points, also face their struggles. Both teams have seen form dip, with City winning just three of their last six league games and Chelsea securing only one victory.
Despite their difficulties, Maresca believes City remain formidable. “With these players, even in tough times, they show their quality. There’s never a good time to face City,” he added.
Both teams now look to shake off their poor runs, with Chelsea aiming to capitalize on City’s vulnerability while Guardiola’s men strive to regain their rhythm and fight for trophies.
