Chelsea Goalkeeper Debate Heats Up Amid Premier League Struggles

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca is contemplating significant changes to his squad as the team struggles to maintain form in the Premier League.

Once considered surprise title contenders after an impressive first half of the season, Chelsea’s fortunes have taken a downturn, dropping to sixth in the table.

At one point, the Blues appeared to be Liverpool’s closest challengers for the title, but a string of poor results since mid-December has derailed their campaign.

Following a goalless draw with Everton and losses to Fulham and Ipswich Town, Chelsea have managed just one win in four league games in 2025. Their latest setback came in a 3-1 defeat against Manchester City.

Chelsea initially took the lead at the Etihad Stadium through Noni Madueke’s early strike. However, their momentum faltered as Josko Gvardiol equalized before halftime.

Erling Haaland capitalized on a defensive lapse to give City the lead, and Phil Foden sealed the victory late in the game.

The spotlight has turned to goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, who was at fault for City’s second goal, rushing off his line unnecessarily.

This marked Sanchez’s fifth error leading directly to a goal this season, the highest among Premier League goalkeepers.

Despite defending Sanchez throughout the season, Maresca hinted at a potential change ahead of Chelsea’s London derby against West Ham.

Backup goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen, who joined from Villarreal last summer, may be given the opportunity to step in.

When questioned about Sanchez’s performance, Maresca admitted, “He knows he needs to do better. He’s fully aware of his mistakes, but we trust him. However, we have a week to evaluate and decide.”

Criticism of Sanchez isn’t new. In November, former Premier League midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker labeled the goalkeeper a “liability” during an interview with BBC Five Live. While praising Sanchez’s shot-stopping abilities, Reo-Coker noted his susceptibility to errors and lapses in concentration, especially when playing out from the back.

Reo-Coker added, “A well-organized, pressing team can exploit Chelsea’s vulnerabilities. To truly contend for the title, they need an upgrade in the goalkeeping department.”

As Chelsea prepare for their upcoming fixtures, Maresca faces tough decisions to revive their campaign and keep their hopes of a top-four finish alive.
