Under the guidance of head coach Enzo Maresca, Chelsea have impressed this season, currently sitting second in the Premier League after 16 games.

Despite their strong start, some analysts believe the team’s title credentials hinge on bolstering specific positions.

While many suggest upgrading their goalkeeper to replace Robert Sanchez or signing a prolific striker like Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen, Wright-Phillips sees things differently.

Speaking to sportscasting.com, the former Chelsea winger emphasized the need for defensive reinforcements.

“Victor Osimhen would thrive in the Premier League, but I don’t think a striker should be Chelsea’s priority in the next few windows,” he stated.

Wright-Phillips pointed out Chelsea’s failure to replace Thiago Silva, stating, “They let Thiago Silva go, but didn’t bring in a replacement.

Right now, they need more experience in defense. Scoring goals isn’t their issue; the problem is conceding. Fixing those mistakes could completely transform Chelsea.”

Chelsea head coach Maresca has echoed similar sentiments. Despite the team’s form, he downplayed title expectations, citing defensive lapses as a major hurdle.

Following their 2-1 victory over Brentford, Maresca reflected on Bryan Mbeumo’s late goal, saying, “Teams that compete for titles don’t concede like that. On 90 minutes, a throw-in for us turned into a goal for them. That’s not something title-winning teams allow.”

As the January transfer window approaches, Chelsea face a pivotal decision: strengthen their defense or risk missing out on title glory.
