Chelsea’s ownership has reportedly decided against signing a new centre-back or goalkeeper in the upcoming January transfer window, despite widespread calls for reinforcements in these areas.
Under head coach Enzo Maresca, Chelsea’s performances have improved this season, but their defensive frailties remain a talking point.
Critics argue that without strengthening their defense and goalkeeper positions, the Blues cannot be considered genuine Premier League title contenders.
Current No.1 goalkeeper Robert Sanchez has faced criticism for inconsistent performances, with many questioning his ability to lead the team to the top of the table.
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher recently highlighted the importance of a world-class goalkeeper, stating, “Chelsea have been impressive, but I can’t imagine Robert Sanchez lifting the Premier League trophy.”
Additionally, Chelsea’s central defense has also drawn scrutiny. Shaun Wright-Phillips noted the club’s failure to adequately replace Thiago Silva after his departure, leaving a lack of experience in the backline. “They’re not struggling to score goals, but they’re conceding too many.
If they can fix their defensive mistakes, Chelsea will look like a completely different team,” Wright-Phillips said.
However, according to The Athletic, Chelsea’s management disagrees with these assessments. They reportedly believe the squad is capable of competing at the highest level without major additions in January.
Despite Chelsea’s rise up the Premier League table, it remains to be seen whether their decision to rely on the current roster will pay off in their quest for silverware this season.
