Chelsea Recall £15.6m Wonderkid Aaron Anselmino Amid Defensive Crisis

Chelsea are bringing back 19-year-old center-back Aaron Anselmino from his loan spell at Boca Juniors, according to reports. Signed for £15.6m last summer, Anselmino was initially loaned back to the Argentinian club for the season.

However, the Blues have decided to cut the arrangement short, with Anselmino expected to arrive in London on Friday and begin training next week.

The timing of his return provides a much-needed boost for Chelsea as they look to strengthen their defense following back-to-back losses against Fulham and Ipswich Town.

Head coach Enzo Maresca, who has downplayed any talk of Chelsea being title contenders, has frequently pointed out the team’s defensive shortcomings.

Fabrizio Romano confirmed the move, posting: “Aaron Anselmino returns to Chelsea as he will join Enzo Maresca’s squad with immediate effect from Boca Juniors.

The Argentinian center-back travels to London at the end of this week, ready to join training at Cobham next week.”

Chelsea’s defensive frailties have been a major concern. Maresca highlighted the issue earlier this month after a narrow 2-1 win over Brentford, stating: “A team that knows how to win titles will not concede a goal like we did in the 90th minute. We are not ready to compete for the title.”

Former Chelsea star Shaun Wright-Phillips echoed similar concerns, urging the club to sign an experienced defender. “They let Thiago Silva go, but they didn’t replace him,” Wright-Phillips remarked. “I think they need more experience in defense.”

Anselmino’s arrival could be a step in the right direction, offering Maresca a fresh option at the back as the Blues aim to stabilize their season.
