Chelsea’s hopes of signing Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel have been reignited, with the club reportedly reopening talks to assess the player’s willingness to move.

The Blues made an initial approach earlier in the January transfer window, but Tel, keen on staying in the Bundesliga, declined the offer.

However, limited opportunities under Vincent Kompany may have caused the 19-year-old to reconsider. Reports suggest Chelsea are eager to explore if Tel is open to changing his mind about a potential switch to west London.

According to transfer expert Florian Plettenberg, Tel’s recent lack of playing time could heavily influence his decision, as he has not featured in Bayern’s last three matches.

Chelsea’s interest in the French U21 international dates back to last summer. Tel, who joined Bayern from Rennes in 2022, has contributed 16 goals and seven assists in 82 appearances for the club and remains under contract until 2029. While he has expressed a desire to stay at Bayern, continued bench time could shift his stance.

The young striker boasts an impressive résumé, having helped France secure the UEFA European U17 Championship in 2022 and winning the Bundesliga title with Bayern the following year.

Bayern Munich, however, are keen to keep Tel, with sporting director Christoph Freund reaffirming their commitment to his development:
“[Tel] is a very important player for us. He’s a great talent and should play an important role for us. Our clear goal is for Mathys to make his breakthrough with us.”

Meanwhile, Bayern are reportedly interested in Chelsea’s Christopher Nkunku but have dismissed the possibility of a swap deal involving Tel. With Chelsea’s pursuit ongoing, the next steps in negotiations may hinge on Tel’s evolving outlook as the transfer window nears its close.
