Chelsea have raised Trevoh Chalobah’s valuation to £40 million, signaling a willingness to sell the defender despite his recent return from a successful loan at Crystal Palace. The 25-year-old was recalled early this week, ending a standout stint at Selhurst Park.
Though Chalobah was sidelined from Chelsea’s first team last summer, head coach Enzo Maresca expressed excitement at his availability following injuries to key defenders Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile.
Maresca clarified that Chalobah’s earlier loan departure stemmed from “financial problems,” sparking hopes among fans for a long-term future for the defender in west London.
However, reports indicate that Chalobah’s recall might only be temporary, with Chelsea likely to offload him in the summer if their asking price is met. This updated valuation nearly doubles the fee they sought last summer.
During his loan spell, Chalobah impressed at Palace, who initially considered making the move permanent. Yet, the Eagles are unwilling to meet Chelsea’s £40 million price tag, which would eclipse their record £27 million signing of Christian Benteke.
Additionally, Chalobah’s £7 million annual salary makes him a costly prospect for Palace, where he would become their highest-paid player.
Despite Chalobah’s departure, Palace has maintained strong form, securing back-to-back 2-0 wins over Leicester and West Ham.
Manager Oliver Glasner commended Chalobah’s impact and professionalism during his loan, emphasizing how Chelsea benefited from his improved form and three goals during the stint.
Chalobah could make his season debut for Chelsea on Monday when the Blues host Wolves, though his long-term future at Stamford Bridge remains uncertain.
