Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has weighed in on Chelsea’s potential to surpass Liverpool in the Premier League title race, calling it a “bold statement.”

Despite early concerns following a chaotic transfer window and the appointment of new manager Enzo Maresca, Chelsea has emerged as a top contender.

They sit second in the league, just four points behind leaders Liverpool, who have a game in hand.

Maresca’s squad boasts the most prolific attack in the league, netting 35 goals in 15 games. With a favorable run of fixtures ahead, Chelsea’s form shows no signs of slowing down.

A Favorable Fixture List

The Blues’ upcoming matches include Brentford, Everton, Fulham, Ipswich Town, Crystal Palace, Bournemouth, and Wolves. Their challenging next big test will be a clash with Manchester City on January 25.

Rebecca Lowe, a sports broadcaster, predicts Chelsea could top the table by the start of 2025. “They have to be taken seriously; they are definitely in the title race,” Lowe said.

Neville’s Analysis

Neville acknowledged Chelsea’s potential to close the gap on Liverpool but stopped short of predicting they would top the table.

“They’ve got a good run of games coming up. If they do get closer, they won’t be able to deny the expectations,” Neville commented.

While praising Maresca’s managerial impact, Neville believes Chelsea is “well ahead of schedule” and could still fall short of winning the title this season.

Key Players Driving Chelsea’s Success

A standout performer in Chelsea’s resurgence has been Cole Palmer. Neville expressed admiration for the young midfielder, who joined from Manchester City in the summer of 2023 for £40 million.

“He’s exceptional, a star in a group of very good players. What he’s gone on to become, no one could have expected,” Neville added.

Palmer’s composure, precision, and creativity have made him one of Chelsea’s most pivotal players.

Liverpool’s Dominance

Meanwhile, Liverpool, under new manager Arne Slot, remains at the top of the Premier League and has dominated the Champions League group stage with a flawless six wins from six matches.

The title race is heating up as Chelsea continues to push for the top spot, with plenty of excitement ahead in the coming weeks.
