Chelsea are reportedly setting their sights on AFC Bournemouth’s Illia Zabarnyi, with plans to pursue the highly-rated defender in the January transfer window.

The 22-year-old Ukrainian international has become a cornerstone of Bournemouth’s defense since joining the club from Dynamo Kyiv for £24 million in January 2023.
His performances have earned widespread praise, and he is considered one of the Cherries’ most vital players.
Zabarnyi, who extended his contract with Bournemouth last summer until 2029, is expected to command a hefty transfer fee if Chelsea are to secure his signature. Head coach Enzo Maresca is said to be an admirer of the young center-back, who has already been capped 43 times by Ukraine.
While Zabarnyi tops Chelsea’s wishlist, the Blues are also keeping tabs on Benfica’s Tomás Araújo. The Portuguese defender, also 22, emerged as a late target for Chelsea in the summer transfer window. However, a deal could not materialize as Benfica refused to sell a key player so close to the deadline.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed Chelsea’s continued interest, stating, “Chelsea are actively monitoring the center-back market. Tomás Araújo remains a player they admire and could revisit, depending on market conditions in January or next summer.”
The competition for defensive reinforcements highlights Chelsea’s commitment to strengthening their squad under Maresca. However, Bournemouth and Benfica will likely drive hard bargains for their prized assets.
