Jason McAteer has called on Chelsea to make a move for Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher in the upcoming January transfer window, valuing the Irish international at £30–40 million.

The Blues currently rely on Robert Sanchez as their first-choice goalkeeper, but his performances have drawn criticism, with many believing he lacks the reliability needed for a title-challenging side.
McAteer, a former Liverpool midfielder, sees Kelleher as the ideal solution for Chelsea, given his talent and readiness for regular first-team football.
Speaking to beIN Sports, McAteer explained: “Caoimhin has reached a point where he must make a big career decision. Does he stay at Liverpool as a backup, or does he seek regular football elsewhere? Chelsea is a great fit for him.
Robert Sanchez hasn’t convinced, and Kelleher would be a significant upgrade.”
Kelleher has played 12 games for Liverpool this season, stepping up in the absence of Alisson Becker, who has been sidelined with a hamstring injury.
Despite his contributions, Liverpool’s long-term plans suggest Kelleher’s opportunities may remain limited. The Reds have already secured Georgian goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, who will join the squad in July 2025.
McAteer added:
“Liverpool’s signing of Mamardashvili signals that Kelleher has the chance to move on and establish himself as a No.1 elsewhere.
His performances over the last couple of seasons justify a valuation of £30–40 million.”
Kelleher himself has expressed a strong desire for regular game time, telling The Telegraph in October: “I was clear last summer that I wanted to play first-team football, whether at Liverpool or elsewhere. I want to be a No.1.”
A potential move to Chelsea would provide Kelleher with the platform to achieve that goal, while also addressing a pressing need for the London club as they seek to solidify their position as Premier League title contenders.
