Chelsea endured frustration as Crystal Palace salvaged a late 1-1 draw in the Premier League on Saturday. Despite taking an early lead through Cole Palmer’s 14th-minute strike, the Blues failed to capitalize on their dominance and paid the price when Jean-Philippe Mateta equalized just eight minutes from time.
The match, however, was a standout moment for 18-year-old debutant Josh Acheampong. Thrust into the starting lineup due to a defensive injury crisis, Acheampong partnered Levi Colwill at the back and delivered a composed, assured performance.
Enzo Maresca, Chelsea’s manager, was full of praise for the academy graduate, who recently resolved a contract standoff that had cast doubt over his future.
“Josh was our best player today,” said Maresca. “For someone his age, playing his first game, it’s remarkable. He showed great composure and potential. But we need to manage his development carefully, taking it one step at a time.”
Acheampong’s performance earned him promotion over experienced defenders like Axel Disasi and Tosin Adarabioyo, signaling the club’s confidence in his abilities.
Maresca highlighted the teenager’s readiness, saying, “We chose him today because he was prepared, and he proved us right.”
Despite the promising individual display, Chelsea’s broader issues persisted. The team’s failure to convert chances remains a concern, with Maresca attributing the draw to their lack of ruthlessness in front of goal.
“We dominated the first half and created opportunities, but if you don’t kill the game, you leave yourself vulnerable,” Maresca explained.
“Every team faces moments like this in a season, where results don’t come despite good performances. It’s about improving and being clinical when it matters.”
Chelsea now sits fourth in the league, just one point ahead of Newcastle, and remains winless in four consecutive Premier League outings.
The Blues must regroup quickly to stay in the race for Champions League qualification while addressing their struggles in converting dominance into victories.
