Enzo Maresca has expressed admiration for Marc Guehi, but Chelsea’s efforts to re-sign their former player face significant challenges.
Guehi’s standout performances for Crystal Palace and his pivotal role in England’s Euro 2024 run have made him a hot transfer prospect. Last summer, Newcastle United failed to meet Palace’s £70 million asking price for the defender.
Now, with 18 months left on his contract and no extension in sight, Palace might consider offers around £40 million. Chelsea, who sold Guehi to Palace for £18 million in 2021, are keen to strengthen their defense amidst injuries to Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile.
“Marc Guehi is a Palace player. I like Marc, but he is not our player,” said Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca. “I also like our current central defenders, as well as others in Italy, Spain, and France. But liking a player doesn’t mean we’ll buy them.”
Chelsea may attempt a part-exchange deal, offering Trevoh Chalobah, currently on loan at Palace. While the Eagles admire Chalobah, his higher wages present a stumbling block, especially given Palace’s tighter wage structure.
Guehi, as a key figure for England, would also expect a top-tier salary at Stamford Bridge, which could conflict with Chelsea’s recent wage limits.
Further complicating matters, Palace reportedly want Chelsea to waive their right to a sell-on fee for Guehi, potentially offsetting the cost of his transfer.
Although a January deal appears unlikely, Chelsea may recall Chalobah from his loan if their injury crisis worsens. However, Maresca seemed skeptical, stating, “Trev is a good player, but he’s currently a Palace player. We’ll see.”
For now, Guehi’s future remains uncertain, but Chelsea’s interest signals their intent to address defensive vulnerabilities this season.
