Chelsea’s Bold Swap Deal for Bayern Prodigy Hits a Wall

Bayern Munich has reportedly shut down Chelsea’s proposed swap deal involving Mathys Tel and Christopher Nkunku, leaving the Blues to explore other options.

As Chelsea looks to strengthen their attacking lineup before the January transfer deadline, reports from Germany suggest that 19-year-old Tel had initial discussions about a potential move to Stamford Bridge.

Despite limited opportunities in the Bundesliga this season, the Blues were eager to assess his availability as they aim for a strong finish to their campaign.

Chelsea proposed an exchange involving Nkunku, 27, who joined from RB Leipzig in 2023 for £52 million. However, persistent injury issues have hampered the Frenchman’s form, and there’s a growing belief within the club that his move has fallen short of expectations.

Bayern’s sporting director, Christoph Freund, dismissed the speculation, firmly stating that the club has no plans to recruit an attacking player or part ways with Tel. “No, if we continue the season like this, which is our plan, then it is not an issue,” Freund said.

Highlighting Bayern’s commitment to Tel, Freund described him as “a very important player” with significant potential. “Our goal is for Mathys to make his breakthrough here.

We’re happy with the quality and depth of our squad,” he explained, adding that discussions have reinforced Tel’s critical role in Bayern’s plans.

Bayern coach Vincent Kompany echoed this sentiment, emphasizing Tel’s development despite his lack of goals this season.

“Mathys is still young but has been doing well, which is why he keeps getting opportunities. He’s part of our group, and everyone has a role to play,” Kompany said.

With Bayern standing firm, Chelsea will need to redirect their efforts to strengthen their attack, as Tel’s future remains firmly tied to the German champions.
