The 19-year-old defender joined Chelsea in a £15.6m deal last summer but remained on loan at Boca Juniors to continue his development.
That arrangement has now ended, and Anselmino has officially moved to Stamford Bridge, where he will begin training with Chelsea’s first team.
Anselmino made 11 appearances in Argentina’s top flight this season, impressing Riquelme with his rapid progress. The former Boca, Barcelona, and Villarreal icon expressed confidence in the youngster’s potential, telling ESPN:
“He’s grown a lot. With his mentality, drive to learn, and talent, he’s on track to becoming a great footballer. He’s destined to play for the national team and compete with top defenders.”
Despite his promise, Anselmino faces stiff competition at Chelsea, with the likes of Wesley Fofana, Levi Colwill, Tosin Adarabioyo, Axel Disasi, and Benoit Badiashile already vying for center-back spots.
Chelsea’s January plans could also impact the squad’s dynamics, as the club looks to offload several players, including Ben Chilwell, Carney Chukwuemeka, Cesare Casadei, Harvey Vale, and Alex Matos.
Both loan and permanent deals are being considered for the players deemed surplus to manager Enzo Maresca’s requirements.
The Blues are gearing up for their next match on Saturday against Crystal Palace, aiming to break a frustrating three-game winless streak.
Maresca is eager to recover from their disappointing results against Everton, Fulham, and Ipswich and get Chelsea’s season back on track.
All eyes will be on Anselmino as he begins his journey in England, with hopes that the teenage sensation can rise to the high expectations set by one of Argentina’s greatest footballing legends.
