Thomas Gravesen is convinced that Christian Eriksen’s time at Manchester United is coming to an end and worries that the Danish midfielder’s career may not recover after his departure.
Now 32, Eriksen is nearing the end of his contract with United, having joined on a free transfer in 2022. With limited game time under Ruben Amorim, who took over in November, he has started only five matches, raising doubts about his future.
Gravesen, a former Denmark international who played for Everton and Real Madrid, believes Eriksen’s trajectory has been in decline and sees little opportunity for him to secure a similar salary elsewhere.
“It’s completely over for Eriksen at United, and I fear his career might be too,” Gravesen told Tipsbladet. “Where can he go and still earn 60 million kroner a year? I don’t see that happening. His development in recent years has been downward, and it’s tough to watch. He’s been one of Denmark’s finest, and it’s sad if his career ends like this.”
Concerns over Eriksen’s adaptability in Amorim’s high-intensity system have also been raised by former Chelsea and Scotland midfielder Pat Nevin.
Last month, Nevin noted that Eriksen and Casemiro were completely left out when United eliminated Arsenal from the FA Cup, hinting at their declining influence.
“These are world-class players in their time, but they didn’t play a single minute,” Nevin told BBC Sport. “They just don’t have the legs for the highest level anymore, and the manager has made his call. Eriksen might still have a role in certain situations, but he’s not part of Amorim’s vision for the future.”
While Amorim has maintained a composed and thoughtful approach, his decisions reflect the ruthless nature of elite football. Eriksen now faces a pivotal moment in his career, with uncertainty surrounding his next move.
