Danny Welbeck managed to travel back with his Brighton teammates following a concerning incident during the Premier League victory against Newcastle United on Saturday.
Match Highlights
Welbeck scored the crucial first-half goal at St James’ Park, marking his fifth goal in the Premier League this season. However, his day took a turn for the worse when he was forced off in the 81st minute after receiving a knee to the lower back during an aerial challenge with Newcastle’s Fabian Schar.
Immediate Medical Attention
Emergency medical staff promptly attended to Welbeck on the field, providing oxygen as he left the pitch. Following the match, Brighton’s head coach, Fabian Hurzeler, provided an update on Welbeck’s condition, stating that he was taken to the hospital for scans on his back.
“I can’t give any updates yet. He will have a scan, and hopefully, we will know more later,” Hurzeler commented. “I think he got an opponent’s knee in the back. Hopefully, it’s not that bad, but we can’t be sure about that.”
Positive News
Fortunately, Welbeck was cleared to fly home with his teammates. Brighton’s social media accounts shared a photo of the striker aboard the flight, captioning it:
“Dat guy’s a bit bruised and battered, but the good news is our match-winner at St James’ Park, Danny Welbeck, is on our British Airways flight home. Also, a huge thank you to the fans who gave Danny a brilliant ovation when he was stretchered off.”
Brighton’s next match will see them face Wolves at home in the Premier League next Saturday.
