Current and former West Ham managers, Julen Lopetegui and David Moyes, have become central figures in the discussion surrounding the club’s rocky start to the 2024-25 Premier League season.

Despite a promising managerial switch that saw Moyes replaced by the experienced Spanish coach, Lopetegui, West Ham’s results have been underwhelming, casting doubt over the future direction of the team.
Moyes, who led West Ham to their first major trophy in 43 years during his second stint, departed less than a year after that historic achievement. The decision to appoint Lopetegui—formerly of Spain’s national team, Real Madrid, and Wolves—was initially seen as a strong move.
The club reinforced their new manager with significant transfer investments, aiming for a successful season. However, the reality has been far from expectations: West Ham has managed just three wins in their first 10 league matches and currently sits 14th in the table, a mere six points above the relegation zone. Their most recent setback came with a 3-0 thrashing at the hands of Nottingham Forest.
Reflecting on the situation, Moyes shared his thoughts on the challenges facing his successor. Speaking on the BBC’s Football Daily podcast, Moyes remarked, “I had a few defeats where we lost heavily at different times, so it happens for all managers. The new manager needs time and an opportunity to establish his own methods.”
The former West Ham boss observed that Lopetegui’s side appears more vulnerable defensively and suggested they seem less vigorous, especially given their absence from European competition this season. “They look a bit more open than before and are possibly more prone to conceding goals. Yet they’re also striving to score more,” he added.
Moyes further noted that, unlike the previous season when West Ham juggled domestic and European commitments, the current squad should be benefiting from fewer matches. “This time last year, we had played five or six more games due to our European competition. The players should be fresher and showing more energy,” Moyes said. “The manager needs time to steady things, and players must step up and showcase their best.”
The pressure on Lopetegui has intensified following the Forest defeat, with reports suggesting that the club’s ownership has warned him of potential dismissal if performances do not improve. An upcoming home match against Everton is now viewed as pivotal.
After the Forest loss, Lopetegui publicly expressed regret and resolve. “First of all, we must apologize to our fans. We are very disappointed but need to use these tough moments to push forward,” he stated. Looking ahead, he emphasized the importance of unity and preparation, saying, “We must regroup and create an environment that will drive us against Everton. It’s crucial to be ready for the next challenge and compete more consistently if we want to achieve good results.”
Lopetegui’s future, as well as the fate of West Ham’s season, now hinges on whether the team can find stability and regain form in the coming matches. For updates on this evolving story, check out our sports coverage and follow Metro Sport on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
