David Moyes has opened up about his challenging spell as Manchester United manager, recounting how his transfer aspirations in 2013 for high-profile players like Gareth Bale, Cesc Fabregas, and Leighton Baines fell through.

Appointed after Sir Alex Ferguson’s legendary reign, Moyes intended to maintain United’s established style and success but faced roadblocks in securing key targets.
Moyes, who lasted less than a year at Old Trafford, shared how close United came to signing Fabregas, with the midfielder initially open to joining if he didn’t feature in Barcelona’s starting lineup.
However, when Fabregas stayed in Spain, Moyes turned his attention to Bale, a player he saw fitting United’s tradition of explosive wing play. United’s efforts, including a substantial offer, couldn’t sway Bale from choosing Real Madrid, leaving Moyes without his desired reinforcements.
Despite missing out on these marquee names, Moyes brought in Marouane Fellaini from Everton. He felt Fellaini would offer the physicality needed for tough away games, though Moyes acknowledges Fellaini wasn’t the star he’d hoped to sign.
Moyes also attempted to bring in Leighton Baines as a replacement for Patrice Evra, but that transfer failed to materialize as well.
In January 2014, United did secure Juan Mata from Chelsea, yet the squad, fiercely loyal to Ferguson, needed time to adjust to the changes under Moyes.
Reflecting on his experience, Moyes noted that while he was thrilled to join the reigning champions, he quickly saw that United’s aging squad required significant transformation. However, Moyes’s tenure was cut short before he could implement these changes.
