Dortmund target Chilwell after missing out on Renato Veiga

Borussia Dortmund are reportedly eyeing Chelsea’s Ben Chilwell after failing to secure Renato Veiga on loan.

Veiga, a Portuguese international, opted to join Juventus instead, leaving Dortmund in search of a left-back as the January transfer window nears its end.

Chilwell, 28, has fallen out of favor at Chelsea under new boss Enzo Maresca, managing just 45 minutes of first-team action this season in a Carabao Cup win over Barrow.

While his £190,000-a-week wages pose a challenge, Chelsea might cover part of his salary, as they did with Raheem Sterling, to facilitate a move.

Although Chilwell reportedly prefers staying in the Premier League, with Everton showing interest, Dortmund remains a possible destination.

Should talks with Chilwell falter, Dortmund could shift their attention to Arsenal’s Oleksandr Zinchenko, who is also rumored to be on the move this month.

Enzo Maresca expressed regret over Chilwell’s limited role, praising his professionalism despite the situation.

“Ben has been top. I feel shame because of that situation,” Maresca said, citing tactical reasons for his preference for other players in the role.

With Dortmund eager to reinforce their squad, the next few days will determine whether Chilwell’s future lies in Germany or elsewhere.
