Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United reign received a much-needed boost with a morale-boosting victory over Manchester City last weekend.

However, former United star Dwight Yorke has cautioned fans against getting carried away, warning that deeper issues still plague the team.

United’s dramatic win at the Etihad, highlighted by Amad Diallo’s late heroics, came after back-to-back defeats against Arsenal and Nottingham Forest.

Yorke acknowledged the temporary joy the result brought but stressed that United’s overall performance remains below par.

“The City win brings joy to a few faces on the day, but the performance was appalling until Nunes gave us a lifeline with the penalty,” Yorke told Sportslens.

“We’re sitting in 13th place in the league—there’s nothing to smile about. The result against City was good, but overall, United have been far off the pace.”

Yorke praised Amad Diallo, whose recent form has been a bright spot in United’s season, and Bruno Fernandes, who scored against City.

However, he expressed concern over the lack of reliable players Amorim can build around.

“Amad is the standout player now. He’s one for the future, someone Amorim can build around,” Yorke said.

“Bruno Fernandes still delivers, but at 30, you can’t rely on him for the long-term. Beyond those two, I struggle to name anyone else Amorim can truly count on.”

Yorke also highlighted the need for a commanding central midfielder, describing United’s squad as lacking depth and burdened by “dead wood.”

He added, “Amorim can’t hang his hat on players like Joshua Zirkzee or Rasmus Hojlund.

I used to think Rashford was that guy, but not anymore. United are missing a brilliant midfielder who can control games and bail the team out under pressure.”

While the derby win gave fans a reason to cheer, Yorke’s analysis is a sobering reminder of the long road ahead for Manchester United to return to their former glory.
