The 59-year-old recently led Nigeria to secure qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after stepping in as caretaker coach in September.
Eguavoen’s appointment followed delays in selecting a substantive head coach. However, discussions are ongoing about whether he should continue leading the team into the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Stakeholders’ Opinions Divided
A source within the NFF revealed that while the federation favors appointing a foreign coach, financial concerns are delaying progress. Meanwhile, the NSC supports retaining Eguavoen due to the limited preparation time before Nigeria’s next World Cup qualifier against Rwanda.
“It’s a challenging situation,” the source disclosed. “The NFF wants to proceed with hiring a foreign coach but is working on the financial logistics. The NSC, however, feels retaining Eguavoen and his technical crew is more practical given the tight timeline.”
Eguavoen’s Track Record and Arguments for Continuity
Eguavoen’s coaching tenure has been characterized by mixed results, but his deep understanding of Nigerian football remains a strong argument in his favor. Having previously led the Super Eagles to success in past AFCON campaigns, his familiarity with the team’s structure and players offers a seamless transition into critical qualifiers.
Proponents of retaining Eguavoen highlight the unity and stability he has brought to the squad during his interim leadership. They argue that introducing a new coach now, especially with limited preparation time, could disrupt the team’s progress and cohesion.
However, critics cite the need for a more tactical and globally experienced coach to propel the Super Eagles to greater heights in the World Cup qualifiers. As the debate intensifies, the decision next week will significantly shape the team’s direction.
