Following Erik ten Hag’s dismissal after a dismal start to the season, Ruud van Nistelrooy is set to serve as interim manager while the club seeks a permanent replacement.

Amorim, regarded as one of the most promising young coaches in world football, is the frontrunner for the position.

United is reportedly ready to pay his €10 million (£8.3 million) release clause at Sporting, indicating their serious intent to secure his services.

If Amorim makes the switch to Old Trafford, ex-Portugal international Joao Pereira is expected to take over as manager at Sporting for the remainder of the 2024/25 season.

In a statement, Sporting confirmed the developments: “Manchester United FC has expressed an interest in hiring coach Ruben Amorim, and the Board of Directors of Sporting SAD has referred to the terms and conditions set out in the employment contract in force between the Company and the coach”

“Specifically the respective termination clause and the amount of Euro 10,000,000.00; Manchester United FC has expressed an interest in paying Sporting SAD the amount of the aforementioned clause.”

The speculation has dominated Portuguese sports news, with reporters stationed outside Sporting’s José Alvalade Stadium. Amidst this backdrop, an emotional elderly Sporting supporter was interviewed by SIC Noticias in Lisbon.

When asked about Amorim’s potential departure, the fan couldn’t hold back tears, saying, “It’s very difficult to watch all this. Ruben Amorim gave Sporting a very different mentality and confidence.”

Despite the emotional turmoil, Amorim remained focused at a press conference, refusing to comment on his future. “I’m very proud to be the coach of Sporting; that’s all,” he stated, underscoring his commitment to the club.

Club legend Peter Schmeichel expressed confidence in Amorim, calling him a “great candidate” for the United role.

He emphasized the urgency of appointing a permanent manager, stating, “This has got to be resolved now. We cannot have another period of interim manager.”

Schmeichel warned that United is lagging behind other top clubs and must act quickly to close the gap.

Amorim’s potential move has not only sparked speculation but has also stirred deep emotions among Sporting fans, highlighting the impact he has had on the club during his tenure.
