Despite Nkunku’s struggles for regular playing time this season, starting just once in Chelsea’s 12 Premier League matches, Maresca emphasized that he is committed to providing the player with more opportunities as the season progresses.

The coach acknowledged Nkunku’s desire for more playing time, which is shared by many of Chelsea’s squad members, but he reassured that the club’s crowded fixture schedule would provide ample chances for rotation.

Maresca also noted that Nkunku, like other attacking players, needs to fit into a balanced team structure, with defensive responsibilities taken into account.

Balancing the Squad and Playing Time

Maresca outlined his approach to squad management, stating that the team’s selection for both Premier League and Conference League matches will be rotated to ensure all players are utilized.

He mentioned players like Joao Felix, Enzo Fernandez, and Benoit Badiashile, who have all featured regularly, and hinted that Nkunku will have opportunities as the season continues. Maresca emphasized the importance of balance in attack and defense, especially when managing the workloads of several attacking talents.

Nkunku’s Best Position and Future Plans

Maresca also discussed Nkunku’s best role on the pitch, acknowledging that his natural position as a No.10 is different from where he has often been deployed, such as in a No.9 role or as a winger.

Despite these adjustments, Maresca reiterated his confidence in Nkunku and his desire for the player to stay at Chelsea. The manager concluded that although Nkunku may not start every game, his involvement will be key throughout the rest of the season.
