Erik ten Hag reportedly aimed to bolster Manchester United’s attack with a familiar face, expressing interest in re-signing former United and Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck.

Ten Hag’s tenure at Old Trafford came to an end after a series of disappointing performances, including the recent 2-1 loss to West Ham.

Despite initial success with a third-place finish in the Premier League and an EFL Cup win, United struggled, ending last season in eighth place, their worst since 1990. This season’s start only worsened, leaving United in 14th and prompting the club’s decision to part ways with Ten Hag.

While United pursued Harry Kane in 2023, Ten Hag hoped to secure another striker to support young forward Rasmus Hojlund, identifying Welbeck as a strong addition.

Welbeck, now excelling at Brighton with six goals in nine games, first joined United’s academy at six and played over 100 games under Sir Alex Ferguson before his 2014 move to Arsenal. United legend Gary Neville also lamented Welbeck’s departure, noting his current form surpasses United’s frontline.

As the club transitions, interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy oversaw a confident 5-2 Carabao Cup win over Leicester. Ruben Amorim of Sporting Lisbon is expected to take over soon, though Van Nistelrooy remains in charge for the Chelsea fixture on Sunday
