Sean Dyche has been dismissed as Everton manager by the club’s new owners just hours ahead of their FA Cup third-round tie. The Toffees, winless in their last five Premier League games, sit 16th in the table, teetering just one point above the relegation zone.
Everton’s poor form has seen them manage only three league wins this season, with their latest outing—a lackluster 1-0 loss to Bournemouth—highlighting their struggles as they failed to register a single shot on target.
Dyche’s sacking comes just a month after The Friedkin Group completed their acquisition of the club from previous owner Farhad Moshiri. In tonight’s FA Cup match against Peterborough United, Under-18s Head Coach Leighton Baines and Club Captain Seamus Coleman will take charge on an interim basis.
“Everton Football Club can confirm that Sean Dyche has been relieved of his duties as Senior Men’s First Team Manager with immediate effect. Ian Woan, Steve Stone, Mark Howard, and Billy Mercer have also left the Club.
The process to appoint a new Manager is underway, and an update will be provided in due course.”
Dyche, appointed in January 2023 to replace Frank Lampard, successfully steered Everton away from relegation that season with a crucial 1-0 victory against Bournemouth on the final day. Last season, despite points deductions for breaching profitability and sustainability rules, Dyche secured a respectable 15th-place finish.
However, this campaign has seen little progress, prompting the new ownership to act decisively. Rumors had linked Jose Mourinho, previously employed by The Friedkin Group at Roma, with the vacant role, but reports suggest Mourinho will remain with Fenerbahce, leaving Everton in search of a new direction.
