Federico Macheda surprised Manchester United sold Scott McTominay, praises his Napoli move

Former Manchester United striker Federico Macheda has expressed surprise over the club’s decision to sell Scott McTominay to Napoli. However, Macheda believes McTominay made the right choice in joining the Serie A side, where he has already made an impressive start. McTominay, who spent over 20 years at Manchester United after joining the academy at age five, became a crucial part of the first-team squad, contributing to the club’s successes in the Carabao Cup and FA Cup. Despite this, his opportunities dwindled last season under Erik ten Hag, where he made just 18 league starts, and the arrival of Manuel Ugarte further threatened his game time.

As a result, the 27-year-old Scotland international sought a move to secure more consistent minutes on the pitch. Napoli signed McTominay for £25 million, a decision that has already paid dividends for the Italian club. McTominay has seamlessly transitioned into Napoli’s squad, earning praise for his work ethic and performances under head coach Antonio Conte. In his first five games for the club, McTominay netted twice and has quickly become a fan favorite with his energetic and all-action displays in midfield.

Macheda, who is best known for his dramatic winning goal for United against Aston Villa in 2009, was pleased to see McTominay adapt to life in Italy so quickly. Speaking to Radio Kiss Kiss in Italy, Macheda praised McTominay for his versatility and commitment. “I know McTominay quite well,” Macheda said. “When I was nearly in the first team at Manchester United, he was playing for the Under-16s. Back then, he didn’t have the physicality he does now, but you could see he was a good player and a great guy.”

Macheda continued by highlighting McTominay’s impressive transition to Serie A, crediting his determination and adaptability. “He’s settling in well at Napoli, and to do so quickly in a new league shows his character and ability. He’s a real worker on the pitch, capable of contributing both offensively and defensively. I think Napoli have made a fantastic signing in Scott.”

The decision to join Napoli was likely influenced by Antonio Conte, according to Macheda. Conte, a highly respected coach, played a crucial role in convincing McTominay to leave Old Trafford. “When a coach like Conte wants you, it’s difficult to say no,” Macheda explained. “I was surprised Manchester United sold him because he always did well, even in tough seasons. But without a doubt, moving to Napoli was the right choice.”

McTominay’s move has also drawn commentary from other football figures. Paolo Di Canio, West Ham legend, humorously suggested that Manchester United bosses should be “arrested” for letting McTominay go, while Premier League all-time top scorer Alan Shearer praised the midfielder’s courage in leaving his boyhood club. Shearer pointed out that McTominay’s decision to move abroad will benefit him both professionally and personally. “Scott made a wise decision to experience something new,” Shearer said. “With United’s struggles this season, he’ll feel he made the right move. He’s already building a good relationship with Romelu Lukaku and seems to be enjoying his time at Napoli.”

With his strong start at Napoli, McTominay appears to have made the right call in leaving Manchester United, proving himself once again in a new environment while continuing to grow as a player.
