Manchester United’s inconsistent season has exposed their reliance on Bruno Fernandes, with Rio Ferdinand claiming the team looks like a Championship-level side when the Portuguese star is absent. The Red Devils have endured a disastrous start to the campaign, sitting 15th in the Premier League as new manager Ruben Amorim struggles to stabilize the club after taking over from Erik ten Hag.

Despite United’s struggles, Fernandes has been a rare bright spot, delivering crucial performances to keep his team competitive. He has registered six goals and six assists in the league while also making an impact in cup competitions, scoring four times to keep United’s hopes alive in the FA Cup and Europa League. Yet, despite his undeniable contributions, the midfielder continues to face criticism from fans and pundits alike.

Ferdinand Calls Out Critics

On his YouTube channel, Rio Ferdinand Presents, the former Manchester United defender expressed frustration over the persistent criticism Fernandes receives. He argued that the midfielder is unfairly judged, with many focusing on his negative body language rather than his remarkable consistency since arriving from Sporting CP in 2020.

Ferdinand highlighted Fernandes’ statistics as proof of his impact, pointing out that he has maintained impressive goal and assist numbers every season. “Bruno is massively disrespected,” Ferdinand said. “People talk about him not being captain material and look for negatives, but his numbers show pure consistency.” He then listed Fernandes’ contributions, emphasizing his ability to produce double-digit goals and assists every season since joining the club.

Leadership and Passion Misinterpreted

A common critique of Fernandes is his body language and perceived lack of discipline on the pitch. Many accuse him of displaying frustration and failing to rally his teammates when the team struggles. However, Ferdinand defended the playmaker, suggesting that his visible frustration stems from his passion and high expectations.

“Yes, there could be improvements in his body language,” Ferdinand admitted. “But that frustration comes from not being helped. He’s constantly delivering, and yet people find reasons to criticize.”

As Manchester United fights to turn their season around, Fernandes remains a key figure, both in performance and leadership. While some fans may continue to scrutinize him, his influence on the pitch is undeniable. If United hopes to climb back to the top, they may need to appreciate their captain’s value before it’s too late.
