FIFA council member and former NFF president, Amaju Pinnick, has provided an important update regarding the Confederation of African Football’s investigation into the troubling incident involving Nigeria’s Super Eagles during their recent trip to Libya.

Pinnick confirmed that a verdict on the matter is imminent, with CAF expected to announce its decision “today or tomorrow.”

This ruling pertains to the distressing events surrounding the disrupted 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier, which took place on October 15, 2024.

The Super Eagles experienced a significant ordeal, as they were held at Al Abaq Airport for over 20 hours prior to the match.

This unexpected and concerning situation led the Nigerian national team to withdraw from the game altogether and return home, highlighting the severity of their treatment during this critical period.

Such an unprecedented scenario raised numerous questions about the safety and treatment of players in international football, especially within the African context.

In an interview with Arise Television, Pinnick emphasized the seriousness of the matter, noting that CAF’s executive committee had given the issue thorough consideration during their recent meeting.

“CAF is taking this issue very seriously,” he stated, underscoring the organization’s commitment to addressing the incident and ensuring the welfare of the players involved.

The fact that this was a topic of “intense discussion” reflects the gravity of the situation and the potential implications for the integrity of African football.

Pinnick praised CAF President Patrice Motsepe for his dedication to integrity and Pan-Africanism, highlighting Motsepe’s leadership in navigating such sensitive issues.

The gravity of the situation was further emphasized by Pinnick, who noted, “This is very serious because anything could have happened to the Super Eagles. CAF is not leaving any stone unturned.”

This statement serves as a reminder of the potential risks faced by teams traveling for international fixtures and the responsibility of governing bodies to ensure the safety of all participants.

In response to the incident, CAF President Motsepe expressed strong condemnation of the mistreatment faced by the Nigerian team.

While he refrained from commenting further until a definitive decision was made, he echoed Pinnick’s sentiments, stating, “We should have zero tolerance. Appropriate action will be taken.”

This commitment to accountability signals a potential shift in how CAF may address similar situations in the future, promoting a culture of respect and safety within African football.

The incident has sparked widespread discussions regarding unsportsmanlike practices and the treatment of teams in African football.

As the continent’s governing body, CAF’s decision will not only impact the Super Eagles but also set a precedent for how similar situations are handled moving forward.

The expectation is that CAF will take decisive action to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future, ensuring that all teams feel safe and respected while representing their countries on the international stage.

As the football community awaits CAF’s ruling, the situation underscores the need for improved standards of conduct and hospitality for visiting teams, reinforcing the importance of protecting players and fostering an environment conducive to fair competition.

The final verdict will likely have significant implications for Nigeria, Libya, and African football as a whole, emphasizing the crucial role of CAF in maintaining integrity within the sport.
