Flying Eagles head coach Aliyu Zubairu has expressed confidence after Nigeria was drawn into a challenging group for the 2025 Africa U20 Cup of Nations, set to take place in Côte d’Ivoire from April 26 to May 18.
Nigeria finds itself in a formidable group alongside Morocco, Egypt, and South Africa—three teams with strong pedigrees in African youth football. However, Zubairu remains unfazed, viewing the draw as an opportunity rather than a setback.
“It’s a very good draw. If a team truly aspires to reach the FIFA World Cup, there is no need to shy away from any opponent,” Zubairu stated. “Facing Egypt, Morocco, and South Africa at this stage presents a tremendous opportunity. I believe it’s a blessing.”

His confidence reflects not only his belief in his squad’s capabilities but also his commitment to testing his players against Africa’s best, which he sees as crucial for their growth.
Zubairu emphasized the need for mental toughness as the team prepares for these high-stakes encounters. He aims to instill self-belief in his players, urging them to approach every opponent with both respect and determination.
“We need to dispel the notion that this is a ‘group of death,’” he said. “In African football, there are no small teams anymore. The key is to prepare very well. A lesser-known nation can surprise everyone if they come prepared.”
With a clear focus on preparation and mindset, Zubairu is determined to lead the Flying Eagles into the tournament with confidence, ready to take on Africa’s elite in pursuit of a place at the FIFA U20 World Cup.
