Former Chelsea player Glen Johnson has expressed his desire for the club to sign Lautaro Martinez from Inter Milan in the upcoming January transfer window. Johnson believes that Chelsea cannot become genuine challengers for the Premier League title under head coach Enzo Maresca without acquiring a ‘world-class’ striker.
Despite having talented forwards such as Nicolas Jackson, who has contributed five goals and three assists in eight league appearances this season, and Christopher Nkunku, who has netted seven goals in 12 matches across all competitions, Johnson feels the need for a superstar to bridge the gap to teams like Manchester City.
“I would love to see Chelsea make a move for Lautaro Martinez at Inter Milan,” Johnson stated during an interview with Genting Casino. “He’s a proper goalscorer. I’m sure there are loads of clubs that would love to sign him, not just Chelsea.”
Martinez, currently with Inter Milan since 2018, has been prolific, scoring 133 goals and providing 46 assists in 291 appearances. The 27-year-old striker has also made 68 caps for the Argentina national team, contributing to their World Cup victory in Qatar and two Copa America titles in 2021 and 2024.
Last season, Martinez was recognized as the Serie A Most Valuable Player and also won the top scorer award with 24 goals, playing a vital role in securing two Serie A titles for Inter Milan in 2020-21 and 2023-24.
