Nicolas Jackson has the potential to become a “top-class” striker, according to Gary Lineker, despite his struggles with finishing at Chelsea.
The 23-year-old forward impressed in the first half of the 2024-25 season, scoring nine goals and helping Chelsea emerge as surprise title contenders.
Chelsea signed him for £32m from Villarreal in 2023, but his debut season was inconsistent. While he contributed 17 goals in all competitions, he faced criticism for his lack of precision in front of goal.
This season, Jackson started strongly but hit a rough patch during the festive period, failing to score in four consecutive games.
Chelsea’s form mirrored his struggles, with disappointing results against relegation-threatened Everton, rivals Fulham, newly-promoted Ipswich Town, and Crystal Palace, leaving fans frustrated.
Despite his recent dip, Lineker remains confident in Jackson’s potential. Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, he highlighted the young striker’s strengths.
“Jackson’s movement is excellent, though he’s not a natural finisher,” Lineker noted.
“If he works on this aspect, he can become a top-class player. At 23, he has time to grow, and his partnership with Cole Palmer is promising.”
Micah Richards echoed similar sentiments but emphasized the need for more ruthlessness. “Jackson is a talented player, but he must become more clinical,”
Richards said. “Chelsea’s inability to finish chances has cost them in recent games.”
Chelsea’s title hopes have taken a hit, but they remain fourth in the Premier League, a better position than many anticipate. Manager Enzo Maresca acknowledged the team’s struggles but urged focus.
As Chelsea fights to regain form, all eyes will be on Jackson to prove he can rise above his challenges and lead the team to success.
