Sheffield United will honor former player George Baldock before their Championship match against Leeds United on Friday. Baldock tragically drowned at 31 after a successful career with over 200 appearances for the club, contributing to two promotions to the Premier League before moving to Panathinaikos this summer.
A tribute was held the day after his passing when Greece, for whom Baldock played 12 times, faced England at Wembley. At Elland Road, both teams will wear black armbands and observe a minute’s silence. Representatives from both clubs will also lay flowers in his memory.
Manager Chris Wilder, who brought Baldock to Sheffield United, expressed his difficulty in processing the loss, stating, “It puts everything into perspective… There’s something miles bigger than the game of football.” He praised Baldock’s character and contributions to the club.
