Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has provided a major update on Rodri’s recovery, hinting that the midfielder could return from his ACL injury before the end of the season. The Ballon d’Or winner was initially expected to miss the entire campaign after undergoing knee surgery following his injury against Arsenal in September.
Rodri’s absence has been keenly felt, with City’s title defense faltering during a rough patch late last year. While the signing of Nico Gonzalez from Porto has offered some cover, Guardiola’s squad has struggled without their midfield general. However, after Rodri resumed individual training last week, hopes are rising that he could play again this season.
Speaking after City’s 3-1 FA Cup victory over Plymouth, Guardiola acknowledged the excitement surrounding Rodri’s potential return but emphasized the need for caution. “The fans must know they are not the only ones excited,” he said. “It’s been five or six months, but one step at a time. We don’t have to make stupid decisions to rush him back.”

Although Rodri is still not close to full fitness, Guardiola revealed that he is back on the ball in training and feeling confident. “I didn’t expect him to return this season—not even for the Club World Cup—but maybe it’s going to happen,” the City boss added.
When asked whether Rodri could feature in a potential FA Cup final at Wembley, Guardiola remained cautious. “I don’t know. First, we have to deserve to be in the semi-finals and then the final.” With City out of the Champions League, their reduced fixture schedule could allow for a more measured recovery plan for the Spanish international.
City’s next Premier League fixture is a crucial clash against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground next Saturday. A win would see Guardiola’s men leapfrog their opponents and move into third place as they continue their push for domestic success.

Guardiola also acknowledged the rare midweek breaks City now have due to their Champions League exit. He sees this as a key period for integrating new players and refining their tactics ahead of a fresh title challenge next season. “It’s quite new for us,” he admitted. “In nine years, it’s never happened. It means we’re not doing well, but we’ll use the time to refresh and prepare for the important games ahead.”
