Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has dismissed concerns about his job security as his team prepares for a high-stakes Champions League play-off against Real Madrid. City, the reigning 2023 champions, must overcome the 15-time winners to secure a spot in the last 16 after both clubs failed to finish in the top eight of the group stage.
Last season, City were eliminated by Madrid on penalties in the quarter-finals, with the Spanish giants eventually lifting the trophy.
Now, Guardiola’s side enter the tie as underdogs and may need to win the tournament outright to qualify next season, as they currently sit fifth in the Premier League.
Despite the mounting pressure, Guardiola remains unfazed. The Spaniard, who extended his contract with City until 2025, dismissed any notion that his job is under immediate threat.
“I don’t think a doctor or an architect is constantly questioned about their position,” Guardiola remarked. “I’m still here because of what we’ve achieved in previous seasons. Otherwise, I probably wouldn’t be.”

City will host Real Madrid at the Etihad on Tuesday before heading to the Bernabéu for the return leg. Guardiola believes progressing past Carlo Ancelotti’s side could provide a much-needed morale boost.
“This season has been a struggle,” he admitted. “Of course, advancing would be a great confidence lift. The players are eager. Facing Madrid, with their history, is always special. A decade ago, we weren’t in these situations often.”
With their European future hanging in the balance, City will need to rediscover their best form to avoid an early exit.
