Former Lazio and Trabzonspor midfielder Ogenyi Onazi has dismissed rumors of his retirement, making it clear that he is still available for selection to the Nigeria national team. Currently playing for Avezzano in Serie D, Onazi last donned the Super Eagles jersey in 2018 but is eager for a recall.

In an interview, the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winner stated, “I have not retired. If they call me an ex-international, I don’t know why, but anyway it is okay.”

His declaration puts to rest concerns regarding his international future, especially after enduring a series of injuries that led many to believe he was no longer in the mix for the Super Eagles.

At 30 years old, Onazi’s situation is further complicated by his current club’s position in the fourth tier of Italian football. He initially made his mark with the national team in 2012 under the legendary coach Stephen Keshi and played a key role in Nigeria’s AFCON victory in 2013, as well as representing the country at the 2014 and 2018 FIFA World Cups.

Despite his recent absence from the squad, Onazi remains optimistic about extending his international career, which boasts one goal and four assists in his 52 caps. His achievements include winning the Coppa Italia with Lazio in 2013 and lifting the Turkish Cup with Trabzonspor in 2020.
