The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed it is investigating the circumstances surrounding the Nigerian national football team, the Super Eagles, after they were stranded at Al Abraq Airport in Libya. The distressing situation arose when the team was instructed by Libyan authorities to land at the airport, leading to significant complications as they were left without transport for over thirteen hours.
In an official statement, CAF expressed its concern, stating: “The Confederation Africaine de Football (CAF) has been in contact with the Libyan and Nigerian authorities after it had been informed that the Nigerian National Football Team (‘Super Eagles’) and their technical team were stranded in disturbing conditions for several hours at an airport that they were allegedly instructed to land by the Libyan authorities. The matter has been referred to the CAF Disciplinary Board for investigation, and appropriate action will be taken against those who violated the CAF Statutes and Regulations.”
The Super Eagles were en route to Benghazi for their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Libya when their flight was unexpectedly diverted to Al Abraq Airport, located over two hours from their intended destination. Upon landing, the team was met with logistical challenges, as no transportation was provided by the Libyan Football Federation, leaving them to navigate the situation alone.
Defender Tanimu Benjamin took to social media to voice the team’s frustration, posting, “4hrs after arrival, still at the airport. Also still have 2hrs drive to the hotel.” This situation has led to widespread uproar, particularly given the timing, just hours before the crucial second-leg AFCON qualifier.
As it stands, reports indicate that the Super Eagles are preparing to return to Nigeria, casting doubt on whether the match against Libya will proceed.
