Former Manchester United defender Jaap Stam has expressed confidence in Matthijs de Ligt’s future under newly appointed manager Ruben Amorim.

De Ligt, who joined United from Bayern Munich last summer, was heavily influenced by Erik ten Hag’s coaching background, with whom he worked at Ajax.
However, with Ten Hag’s departure, United has moved quickly to secure Amorim from Sporting Lisbon on a two-and-a-half-year contract, with the 39-year-old expected to take charge after the international break.
Stam believes that Amorim’s tactical preference for a three-center-back system could allow De Ligt to thrive, especially alongside fellow defenders Lisandro Martinez and Harry Maguire.
With Amorim’s success in developing young talent and implementing a dynamic 3-4-2-1 formation, Stam sees a promising future for De Ligt in this new system, highlighting the Dutchman’s room for improvement in consistency and confidence.
Stam also suggests that the midfield lineup remains a critical decision, with Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo as potential core players.
