Ruud van Nistelrooy’s role as interim manager at Manchester United has sparked speculation about his future with the club.

After the sacking of Erik ten Hag, United appointed van Nistelrooy as interim manager, but Jaap Stam, his former teammate, believes the Dutch legend may not remain under new manager Ruben Amorim.

Ruben Amorim will assume the position after completing his duties at Sporting Lisbon. Amorim’s contract, confirmed on Friday, places him as the new permanent manager, with his arrival in Manchester expected post-International break following Sporting’s match against Braga on November 10.

Van Nistelrooy, who returned to United this summer to work under Ten Hag, is set to lead the team through three more games, including the upcoming clash against Chelsea.

Known for his successful managerial stint at PSV Eindhoven, his future at United remains uncertain as Amorim plans to bring his own backroom staff.

In a recent press conference, van Nistelrooy expressed a desire to continue at United and pointed to his two-year contract, yet the possibility of becoming “just another assistant” has raised doubts.

Jaap Stam, who briefly shared the pitch with van Nistelrooy at United, suggests that a supporting role may not suit a figure of van Nistelrooy’s stature, explaining, “Someone like Ruud, with his experience and reputation, needs a position where he can truly make a difference.

Amorim will likely bring in his assistants, which might make Ruud’s role just one of many coaches. I don’t think that’s fitting for Ruud.”

Stam emphasized the value van Nistelrooy brings to United and suggested it would be a shame if he left due to limited responsibilities under new leadership.

As van Nistelrooy prepares for three more games, including the Europa League match against PAOK and a Premier League rematch with Leicester City on November 10, his future remains in focus.

While a string of victories would undoubtedly bolster his reputation, the club’s decision to pursue a new direction with Amorim could overshadow his potential contributions.

Reflecting on his former teammate’s talent, Stam added, “Winning against Chelsea would be a great boost. Ruud is a skilled manager with success in Holland; it’s unfortunate he won’t get a longer tenure here.”
